The Short Answer
An estimator works out what a job will cost to build. Most estimators work for a builder, a trade contractor or a supplier, and they price the work so the company can tender or quote.
A quantity surveyor also measures and prices, but the role often reaches further. Quantity surveyors may prepare cost plans, bills of quantities and valuations, and may track costs and variations through the life of a project. Many work for clients, developers or project teams.
In practice the roles overlap, and some people do both. The right choice depends on what you need.
